I had a large gravity-fed watering system that worked decently, but it had a couple of annoying issues: (1) the 360-degree water trough would also get filled with debris that dirtied water; and (2) the plastic container was constantly getting algae or something similar – really a pain to keep clean. And as I discovered, both the container and the base (both plastic) succumb easily to the Arizona heat. I was shocked at the price for a new one.So what about these watering cups? Well, I bought a bucket and lid from Lowes, drilled holes, and had my new watering system up and running in a matter of minutes. No leaks, and the water inside the bucket has managed to stay pristine, meaning better water for the chickens and a lot less cleaning time for me. The little cups do get some dirt in them, but a quick rinse with the hose seems to solve the issue. Other than that, these are working flawlessly. My chickens did take a day or so to figure these out, but that is true when introducing anything new to chickens. One quick tip. I recommend installing these low down on your container. I made the mistake of installing mine 6 inches from the bottom of the bucket. This means that once the water level dips below that 6″ mark, water can’t enter the watering cups. Put these down low, then use bricks or something similar to elevate the bucket/container to a good drinking height.2 months in with these now, I’m wishing I’d bought them sooner. They do seem a little expensive – the only reason for rating these only 4 stars. Other than that, I highly recommend them.
